Camporee Among the Stars: A Galactic Scout Adventure

By Kian Gramzow: Troop 12 Historian

Star Wars Camporee

One of the best parts of the year is Camporee, which is a council-wide scouting weekend filled with action and competition.

This year, Troop 12 attended Camporee out of council and went to the Santiam River District Spring Camporee. This year’s theme was “May the Fourth be with you,” so each patrol brought a spacecraft-decorated wagon to carry their gear.

A Rainy Setup

We embarked on this journey on a Friday afternoon and drove to Salem to set up camp. We were greeted with a downpour of rain that persisted for much of our time at camp.

We constructed six dining flies and lined up our tents in jamboree-style lines. Then, we lashed together an entryway to our camp and erected a fence to surround our campsite.

Atop our campsite entrance, we mounted a “Death Star” and the Troop 12 logo to represent both the theme and our scout spirit.

We retreated to the warmth and safety of our tents to rest for the long day ahead.

A Test of Scout Skills

A winning Scout Dish

On Saturday morning, we cooked our patrol breakfasts and attended the flag ceremony. There, they gave us a rundown of the schedule and activities.

We needed to complete eight challenges throughout the campground, attend information booths, and submit a plate of our dinner for OA members to judge.

The eight scout skills stations included a compass course, geocaching, first aid, fire building, minefield, Kim’s game, knot tying, and lashing.

The Troop 12 assistant scoutmasters administered the knot-tying skills station. Many stations were familiar, while others were new and exciting. Fire building and knot-tying were among our favorite stations of the weekend.

Troop 12 is Victorious

At the closing campfire ceremony, our patrols received many awards, including the top patrol award, which went to Troop 12's Wolf Patrol.

Duty to God

The next morning, we made breakfast and packed up our campsite to load up the trailer. After the closing flag ceremony, we drove to St. Edward Church in Salem to attend Sunday morning service.
